JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Former Mississippi Gov. William Winter will be roasted by the Mississippi Press Association at its annual benefit for its education foundation.

Winter, 91, served as governor from 1980-84. His crowning achievement was passage of the Education Reform Act of 1982. Since then, he has worked as an attorney and advocate for improving education and for racial reconciliation.

A native of Grenada, Winter previously served as lieutenant governor 1972-1976, state treasurer 1964-1968, state tax collector 1956-1964, and in the Mississippi House of Representatives 1948-1956.

The 25th annual MPA program to benefit the MPA Education Foundation will be held Jan. 29 at the Jackson Hilton Hotel.
