BECKLEY, W.Va. (AP) - Federal funding is being made available for West Virginia fire departments and emergency responders.

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall says that the Federal Emergency Management Agency will soon be accepting applications to its Assistance to Firefighters Grant program.

The program awards grants to fire departments and emergency medical service organizations for tools and resources necessary to enhance their ability to protect the health and safety of the public, as well as first-responders. The money can be used to hire staff and personnel and buy emergency response equipment and training, as well as emergency vehicles.

The application period opens Monday and closes on Dec. 5.
