DERIDDER, La. (AP) - Friends of a soldier killed in Afghanistan plan to install a black granite memorial in a DeRidder park.

One of the organizers, Reagan Pope, tells The Town Talk (https://townta.lk/1o7jkut ) that Sgt. 1st Class Andrew T. Weathers was loved in the community and his friends want him to be remembered. He attended school in DeRidder.

Weathers died Sept. 30 from wounds suffered when his team came under small-arms fire two days earlier.

His friends have raised nearly $5,000 for the memorial. A bronze plaque engraved with his name and the mottoes of the special forces and his unit will be mounted on a polished granite column in West Park.
