NEWTON, Iowa (AP) - A man who’d been pulled over on Interstate 80 in central Iowa has been fatally struck by a passing vehicle.

Authorities say the man was struck a little after 5 a.m. Saturday near mile marker 161 in Jasper County. An Iowa state trooper had taken the man into custody on suspicion of operating while intoxicated. A patrol report says the trooper was inventorying the man’s vehicle when the man tried to flee by running across the interstate. A vehicle soon hit him.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.
