NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - About 100 people hoping to take advantage of same-day voter registration in New Haven were turned away Tuesday when the polls closed while they were still in line.

The New Haven Register reports some of the would-be voters waited in line for more than 2 ½ hours to try and register, but were told a half an hour before the polls closed that only those who made it into the office by 8 p.m. would get to cast ballots.

Officials handed out registration cards to those in line in an effort to expedite the process.

Volunteers also passed out sandwiches, apples and water bottles and singing groups from Yale University entertained the crowd.
