TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A man convicted of killing another man during a 2012 drug deal in a Tucson parking lot has been sentenced to life in prison.

The Arizona Daily Star reports (https://bit.ly/1wu4NL1 ) that Jovon Luis Mankel was given the sentence for his conviction in Jose Carlos Gonzales’ death.

Authorities say Mankel and his girlfriend had agreed to meet Gonzales to sell him painkillers.

Instead, Gonzales was accused of robbing Mankel and his girlfriend at gunpoint and then trying to flee.

Authorities say Mankel grabbed a handgun, pursued Gonzales and shot him several times.

Gonzales died later at the hospital.

Mankel’s attorneys argued their client acted in self-defense.

Prosecutors say Mankel had two previous felony convictions and wasn’t permitted to have firearm.

Mankel apologized to Gonzales’ family at the sentencing hearing.
