AKRON, Ohio (AP) - Authorities in northeast Ohio say a police officer fatally shot a man who fought with officers who tried to arrest him.

The Akron officer shot the 29-year-old man around 5 p.m. Monday. The county coroner’s office identified him as Raupheal Thomas of Akron.

Officers were investigating reports of two men possibly casing the neighborhood. Police say Thomas became confrontational with the officers, and a fight ensued when they tried to arrest him. The officer shot Thomas during the fight, according to police.

He died later at a hospital.

Police say the officer who shot Thomas has been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. He is a 15-year veteran of the force.
