SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Barrow is trailing a Republican challenger in an eastern Georgia congressional district drawn to favor the GOP.

Early election returns Tuesday showed Republican Rick Allen ahead of Barrow with roughly half the vote counted. Barrow is seeking a sixth term in the 12th District, which had the only truly competitive U.S. House race in Georgia this year.

Barrow campaigned as a bipartisan congressman who criticizes fellow Democrats and President Barack Obama on issues such as health care and gun control. He was endorsed by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Rifle Association.

Allen, who owns an Augusta construction company, sought to persuade voters that Barrow is more two-faced than independent. The Republican also promised to limit himself to no more than eight years in Congress.
