LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Democratic U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth is easily winning re-election in Kentucky’s 3rd congressional district.

The former newspaper publisher was leading Republican challenger Michael Macfarlane and independent candidate Gregory Peter Puccetti in early returns Tuesday night.

Yarmuth was first elected in 2006, when he defeated former Republican U.S. Rep. Anne Northup in a year in which Democrats won control of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Macfarlane is a surgeon who has practiced at Jewish Hospital, Norton Healthcare and Baptist East. He ran on a platform of opposing the Affordable Care Act, which he said would make health care unaffordable for many Kentuckians.

Yarmuth said that he helped write the Affordable Care Act and that it has given health insurance to more than 521,000 Kentuckians, many for the first time.
