AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - An Augusta woman prosecutors say sexually assaulted a young girl at the behest of a convicted sex offender serving time at a federal prison in Kansas has been sentenced to spend nine months in jail.

Amy Whitney pleaded guilty Tuesday to unlawful sexual contact.

The Kennebec Journal (https://bit.ly/1sg9aEa ) reports that the 37-year-old Whitney was sentenced to five years in jail with all but nine months suspended and two years of probation. She was also ordered to continue counseling and was prohibited from having contact with the inmate.

Whitney’s attorney says his client started counseling in January 2013 and has attended more than 50 sessions.

Police say the witness was 12 and 13 at the time of the offenses that occurred between August 2011 and August 2012.
