PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Providence Mayor-elect Jorge Elorza has met with outgoing Mayor Angel Taveras at City Hall a day after winning the race over former Mayor Buddy Cianci.

Taveras says he met with Elorza for about an hour Wednesday and gave him a tour of his new office. He says he expects they’ll meet regularly to make sure the transition goes as smoothly as possible.

Earlier Wednesday, Elorza told reporters voters showed they want a new direction in the city by picking him over Cianci, a six-time mayor and two-time felon.

Taveras says he feels a sense of renewal and hope in the city and its residents over the result. He called it a vote for the future.

Elorza says he’ll announce more transition plans next week.
