EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A former Fort Bliss soldier must serve six months in federal prison for stealing about $30,000 worth of Army gear while deployed to Afghanistan.

Ex-Sgt. Dexroy Germaine Hamilton was sentenced in El Paso in a case that prosecutors on Tuesday said involved trafficking of military munitions.

Hamilton in August pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit theft of government property and to smuggling goods into the U.S. for resale.

Hamilton was in Afghanistan from mid-2013 until earlier this year. Investigators in March searched Hamilton’s El Paso home and recovered night vision devices and weapons-related items, including dozens of magazines.

Further details weren’t immediately available on Hamilton’s military service. A message left Wednesday with Fort Bliss wasn’t immediately returned.
