WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Wilmington Police say an officer’s skull was fractured when a gun thrown by a man he was chasing slid off a roof and hit the officer in the head.

The department says about 4 p.m. Tuesday, Officer Justin Wilkers was chasing a man who ran when Wilkers tried to stop him after a report of a man with a gun.

Police say when Wilkers chased the man into an alley, the man threw a 9mm Smith and Wesson handgun onto a 2-story rooftop. Officers say Wilkers caught with the man.

The department says the handgun tossed onto the roof slid off, striking Wilkers in the head. Wilkers was taken to Christiana Hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Twenty-five-year-old Ernest Clark of Wilmington was charged with assault and other offenses.
