PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Republican Dan Harrop says the race for mayor of Providence was “a wild ride,” and he’s content with Democrat Jorge Elorza’s victory over former Mayor Buddy Cianci.

Harrop said he was putting aside partisan politics to vote for Elorza Tuesday because he wanted to help keep Cianci, an independent, from winning. Cianci was forced from office twice due to felonies.

Harrop received less than three percent of the vote.

During debates, Elorza and Harrop would hammer Cianci on his criminal record, and Harrop would occasionally praise Elorza’s positions.

When asked Wednesday if he’d offer Harrop a role as an adviser, Elorza said he wants everyone who cares about the city to have a voice. Harrop says he’s happy to meet with Elorza from time to time to discuss his ideas.
