ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Sandy Jones has been elected to the District 5 seat on the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission.

The Democrat defeated Republican incumbent Ben Hall in a race to fill the only contested seat on regulatory panel, which oversees public utilities, telecommunications and insurance companies.

Jones had sought to recapture his old seat. The former owner of a construction company in Williamsburg, he had promised to help bring new jobs to New Mexico and push for the commission to regulate itself.

Hall, a Ruidoso businessman, had said he wanted to simplify the commission’s rules and regulations and reorganize the agency.

District 5 stretches from Los Lunas south to Dona Ana County and west to Arizona.
