MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) - A May trial has been scheduled for a 40-year-old Northwood man accused of killing his former girlfriend last year.

Tyrone Washington Jr. is charged with stabbing to death 30-year-old Justine Smith. Washington’s trial is set to begin May 11 in Fort Dodge. The trial was moved to Webster County from Worth County after Washington’s lawyer argued that with so few blacks in Worth County, Washington, who is black, wouldn’t be judged by a jury of his peers.

The Mason City Globe Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1y2OCTe ) that the Webster County trial was delayed from Oct. 20 to give Washington’s lawyer more time to investigate the number of blacks on juries in Webster County.
