MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Prosecutors say a Memphis man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing copper from a vacant mall.

Shelby County’s district attorney’s office says 61-year-old Dung Tran was sentenced Monday. He was convicted by a jury in September of theft of property over $1,000, vandalism over $1,000, burglary of a building and possession of burglary tools.

Tran was spotted on live video surveillance entering the Goldsmith building through a trash chute at the vacant Raleigh Springs Mall on April 5, 2012.

Investigating officers found several large heating and air conditioning radiators that were missing coils and copper.

Officers followed a trail of scratch marks on the floor, heard banging sounds and found Tran damaging a large industrial cooling unit. Several tools also were found.
