GASTONIA, N.C. (AP) - A Gastonia man has pleaded guilty in the stabbing death of his ex-wife’s new husband last year.

The Gaston Gazette reported (https://bit.ly/1okcqSH) that 58-year-old Steve Todd Neely Sr. pleaded guilty Tuesday in Gastonia to second-degree murder. The plea came a week before he was to go on trial on a murder charge in the death of 49-year-old David Colbert.

Neely was sentenced to between 20 and 25 years in prison.

Neely apologized to his former wife and his children during the hearing.

Neely had gone on trial in August in the death, but the jury was unable to decide between first-degree and second-degree murder. The new trial had been scheduled Nov. 10.
