OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing and the university’s School of Allied Health Professions have been awarded a $3.2 million grant to study osteoporosis

The university says the research will focus on prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Experts say 10 million Americans have osteoporosis, or severe bone loss, and 34 million have osteopenia, or early bone loss. The experts say 50 percent of women will suffer an osteoporotic fracture during their lives.

The researchers will test three treatments for improving bone strength and preventing bone loss in osteopenic women during their first five years of menopause.
