RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Allen has narrowly been elected Washoe County sheriff.

With all precincts reporting, Allen defeated Undersheriff Tim Kuzanek by just 820 votes out of a total of some 108,000 votes cast, or by 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent.

It was the closest sheriff’s race in more than a half century as Kuzanek outspent Allen by more than a 4 to 1 margin. Kuzanek spent $432,000 compared with Allen’s $92,544.

Allen, an NHP public information officer, won a five-way primary with 46 percent of the vote to Kuzanek’s 28 percent.

Sheriff Michael Haley did not seek re-election.
