VALHALLA, N.Y. (AP) - An off-duty firefighter has been charged with criminally negligent homicide and DWI after prosecutors say his wrong-way SUV slammed into a car and killed a woman delivering newspapers.

Erik Refvik was arraigned in Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla where he was recovering from injuries sustained in Monday’s accident. Bail was set at $25,000.

Authorities say Refvik’s blood-alcohol level was almost twice the legal limit.

Authorities tell the Journal News (https://lohud.us/1uv46BH ) Refvik was suspended without pay from the White Plains’ fire department. He had a prior DWI conviction to which he pleaded guilty in 2003. His lawyer couldn’t immediately be reached for comment.

Reyda LaMadrid died at the scene. Her husband Edgar Lopez, who was driving, suffered serious injuries.

LaMadrid was an independent contractor for the Journal News’ delivery firm.
