HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) - Tess Smith has been elected superintendent of the Lamar County school system.

Complete but official results show Smith defeated challenger Wayne Folkes.

The race was a special election to fill the seat vacated in May by Ben Burnett, who left to become dean of the School of Education at William Carey University.

Smith had been interim superintendent.

Smith will serve out the remainder of Burnett’s term, which ends in January 2016.

She expects to be sworn in as superintendent at the next school board meeting on Nov. 17.

Folkes is the school district’s director of student services.
