FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) - Officials say a student released a blast of pepper spray outside the cafeteria at Freehold Township High School.

Students and teachers were required to shelter in place after the 8:20 a.m. incident Wednesday.

The school says in a statement that no students or teachers were directly struck by the spray. However, those who were in the area received medical treatment.

The school says the area was cleared and air quality samples were taken before classes resumed at 10:30 a.m.
