MIDDLETON, Wis. (AP) - Police say a man who tried to rob a Middleton convenience store attacked an employee with a hammer, sending the clerk to the hospital.

Authorities say the attack happened about 9 p.m. Tuesday at the PDQ store. Middleton Sgt. Don Mueller says the suspect went to the checkout area, grabbed the clerk’s shirt, pulled him across the counter and hit him in the head with a hammer. The suspect demanded cash from the register, but when the clerk didn’t respond, he fled. The clerk was taken to a local hospital. His condition is not known.

Officers used a tracking dog to try to find the suspect, who remains at large.

Police suspect the man also tried to break into a car and a house later Tuesday night.
