OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) - State police say a central New York man on parole for burglary has been charged with killing a 17-year-old girl at a Lake Ontario beach last summer.

Troopers say 32-year-old Steven Szatanek (zuh-TAN’-ehk) of Baldwinsville was arraigned Wednesday on charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the drowning death of Anna-Rose Shove of the Wayne County town of Ontario.

Shove’s body was discovered Aug. 10 near an RV campground where her family had been staying in Richland, 35 miles north of Syracuse.

Troopers say Szatanek was arrested for a parole violation a week after Shove’s death and has remained jailed during the investigation. Police say he had approached other girls the day of the crime.

Szatanek is due back in Oswego County Court on Friday. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
