RENO, Nev. (AP) - The embattled Washoe County School Board has two new members.

Nick Smith trounced board President Barbara Cook by a 64 percent to 36 percent margin, while Veronica Frenkel narrowly defeated Jim Shaw for the post being vacated by Estela Gutierrez.

Frenkel, an organizational development consultant, edged Shaw, a former Sparks city councilman and Washoe County commissioner, by just 181 votes out of a total of some 43,000 votes cast.

The school board has been under fire since six of seven members held an illegal closed meeting July 22 and announced Superintendent Pedro Martinez had been “relieved of his duties.”

Martinez filed a wrongful termination lawsuit, and the school board agreed to a more than $700,000 settlement last month.
