SOUTH MILWAUKEE, Wis. (AP) - A South Milwaukee dog is recovering after being mauled by a deer and suffering extensive injuries.

Ted Moss tells WISN-TV (https://bit.ly/1sjatSM ) he was walking his dogs in Grant Park when he saw a buck and a doe. He says the doe ran away but the buck came out of the woods and attacked his black Labrador named Rowdy.

Moss says he has a concealed carry permit and a pistol. He says Rowdy was yelping so he shot his pistol. The buck ran off.

He says he took Rowdy to a rescue veterinarian for surgery and she is expected to return home by Saturday.

Guy Smith of the Milwaukee County Parks Department says that while the buck’s behavior wasn’t normal, residents should keep dogs on leashes because it is deer mating season.
