GREENVILLE, Miss. (AP) - An aviation company has been fined $1 million for handling hazardous waste at Greenville Mid-Delta Airport without a permit.

California-based Leading Edge Aviation Services Inc. operated a commercial aircraft painting facility at the airport. The plant closed last year.

A government investigation revealed that in April and May 2010 the company failed to properly handle the waste from a paint stripping process when it stored it in an open pit without a permit.

Leading Edge was fined $700,000 after pleading guilty to a federal felony count.

The company also was fined $275,000 by the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality. It also will pay a $25,000 community service fine.

The company is required to clean up the Greenville site. It will be on probation for a year.
