DETROIT (AP) - Preliminary examinations are scheduled for a Detroit couple charged in the death of the woman’s 7-year-old son who weighed only 27 pounds.

Twenty-two-year-old Victoria Foster and her boyfriend, 28-year-old Cory Rimson, are due in court Thursday on first-degree murder and torture charges.

Immanuel Foster died Oct. 24 at a hospital. Investigators were told the boy was taken to the hospital after complaining of abdominal pain and losing consciousness.

Bruises and abrasions were found on his body. The medical examiner’s office conducted an autopsy but said it needs more tests to determine cause and manner of death.

Authorities removed two other children from the home.

Rimson’s lawyer Christine Grand says it’s unusual to have a murder charge when cause of death hasn’t been determined. Victoria Foster’s lawyer declined to comment Wednesday.
