NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - Officials are marking the start of construction of the expansion of a regional trash-handling center in North Las Vegas that they say will make it the largest residential recycling complex in the nation.

Republic Services and subsidiary Republic Silver State Disposal say the project will more than double the size of the the Southern Nevada Recycling Complex at Cheyenne Avenue and Commerce Street, and will double its capacity for waste recovery from the region.

Mayor John Lee will join a Thursday morning ceremony to hail the jobs the facility will create during construction over the next year, and operations after that.

Republic says the facility will have automated controls and optical sorters, and will be able to process about 1,000 tons of mixed recyclables per day.
