TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Tucson Fire Department says people at an eastside apartment complex used fire extinguishers to try to keep a fire from spreading until firefighters arrived.

Fire Capt. Barrett Baker says approximately eight extinguishers were used Wednesday evening against the fire in an apartment on the second floor as flames lapped upward to a third-floor unit.

Nine fire units responded to the fire, which was in the interior of the complex.

Baker says investigators determined that the fire started on a couch because of improper disposal of smoking material.
