A U.S. F-16 lost contact with Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida on Thursday. A search effort by the Coast Guard is underway in the Gulf of Mexico.

The 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron pilot belongs to the 325th Fighter Wing based there. He was performing a routine training mission at the time contact was lost with his aircraft.

“The rescue of our Airman is our top priority,” Col. Mark O’Laughlin, 325th Fighter Wing Vice Commander, said Thursday, Stars and Stripes reported.

A base official told Stars and Stripes that the F-16 was roughly 75 miles out into the Gulf of Mexico when the aircraft disappeared. The plane has not been recovered.
