DEVORE, Calif. (AP) - An attempted theft from a Southern California freeway construction site fell flat over a blown tire.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that thieves drove a rented U-Haul truck through an unlocked gate at the Caltrans construction site at the Interstate 15 and 215 interchange in Devore.

The statement says the men took some $10,000 in equipment that belonged to a subcontractor.

But about an hour later along a desert highway in Victorville, a tow truck driver summoned to help with a flat tire saw suspicious items in the back of the truck.

He called deputies, who arrested the two men.
