WHAT’S AT STAKE

Florida Atlantic and North Texas both have to win all of their remaining games to be bowl eligible, so one of them will be eliminated from postseason contention. North Texas goes into the 1,000th game in program history looking to end a four-game losing streak. The Owls have lost the last three games in the series.



KEY MATCHUP

FAU junior Luck Whitehead and UNT junior Carlos Harris, two of the league’s top all-purpose players. Whitehead is second with 154.3 all-purpose yards per game, and Harris is fourth at 149.5 yards per game. Harris is second in the league 77.9 yards receiving a game, just ahead of Whitehead’s 69 yards per game. Both average about 24 yards on kickoff returns.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Florida Atlantic: DBs Sharrod Neasman and Damian Parms each had 14 tackles last week against Rice. Parms is the team’s leading tackler with 75.

North Texas: LB Derek Akunne leads Conference USA with 9.1 tackles per game. He has led the Mean Green in tackles the past four games, averaging 13.3 a game in that stretch.

North Texas has scored exactly 21 points three times this seasons - all losses. They are 0-10 when scoring exactly 21 points in coach Dan McCarney’s four seasons. … FAU special teams coach Chris Hurd played at North Texas from 2000-03, where he went from walk-on to 2003 Sun Belt Conference defensive player of the year. He was a graduate assistant coach for the Mean Green from 2004-06. This will be Hurd’s first game coaching against his alma mater. … North Texas returner Darvin Kidsy is one of three players in the country this season with a punt and kickoff return for a touchdown.
