RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) - Authorities say a 50-year-old man died after falling from a cliff in western South Dakota.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office says the fall occurred Thursday morning at an area near Rapid City known as Falling Rock.

The man’s name has not been released. Authorities say the man was hiking with his family when he lost his footing and plunged about 100 feet to his death.

The area of steep limestone cliffs in the Black Hills National Forest is popular with rock climbers.

Several people have been killed from falls in the area, including a 39-year-old woman who died in April and an 8-year-old boy who fell 150 feet to his death in 2005.

Hikers have died at the cliffs in 2006, 2002, 2001, and 1992. Others have suffered serious injuries.
