DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - An Iowa man has been given 60 days in prison for torturing and killing a bald eagle.

District Court Judge John A. Jarvey sentenced 36-year-old Jason John Thomas, of What Cheer, on Thursday for taking and possessing a bald eagle. He was ordered to serve one year of supervised release and pay a $2,000 fine.

Thomas was accused of killing the eagle in March 2011 while he boated on the South Skunk River in Mahaska County. An affidavit says he pursued the bird by boat and eventually pinned it under a log and hit it with a stick.

As part of his supervised release, Thomas will perform 80 hours of community service. He will not be allowed to hunt.
