BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) - The newly elected Des Moines County attorney has fired a prosecutor, an investigator and a receptionist.

County attorney Amy Beavers fired the employees on Wednesday, The Hawk Eye (https://bit.ly/1zy0uRl ) reported.

“I have been elected Des Moines County Attorney, and I believe in order to make positive changes in the office, I needed to make the decisions I made today,” Beavers said.

She said she couldn’t comment on why those employees were fired, citing rules concerning personnel decisions.

Beavers said she will appoint Justin Stonerook to the position of felony prosecutor, which had been held by Lisa Schaefer since 2003.

“I wasn’t particularly surprised,” Schaefer said. “I just got the feeling there would be changes made if she was elected, and I would be a part of those changes.”

Schaefer is married to a Burlington police officer and said she doesn’t have any plans to leave the city.

“This is where my family is,” she said. “Obviously, there aren’t any other opportunities to be a prosecutor in Des Moines County, so I am going to take a few weeks off and see what my options are. I’m moving forward with my life.”

Beavers said she will move a part-time worker into the receptionist position and will work with the Des Moines County Sheriff in finding someone to take the investigator’s position.

Beavers won the general election Tuesday, defeating local attorney and Danville mayor Trent Henkelvig with 61 percent of the vote.
