NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) - New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio has reversed himself and now says he will seek a second term next year.

Finizio made his announcement on his Facebook page Wednesday, saying he wants to continue what he started after watching Tuesday’s election results. He cited voter-approved referendum questions related to the city.

The Day of New London reported Thursday the mayor’s reversal.

Finizio announced on April 1 he would not seek another term. He said he could not lead the city through financial problems if every decision was seen as a move intended to win re-election.

He now says New London’s books are balanced and “strong city leadership” is needed to complete magnet school projects and the Coast Guard Museum

Finizio said his initial decision was not a ploy or a gimmick.
