RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) - Rio Rancho police say a 10-year-old girl who was the subject of a search before she returned home on her own was hiding within a mile of her home while missing.

According to police, Alexandra Greenwell ran away because she had been disciplined by her mother, who reported her daughter missing the morning of Oct. 30. The girl returned home over the weekend.

Lt. Nicholas Onken says it turns out that the girl took blankets with her to an open mesa less than a mile from her home. She stayed there the entire time and ducked under bushes when search teams approached.

Onken says police have closed their investigation but will use lessons learned in the search and apply them in similar situations in the future.
