SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) - Alcohol can now be purchased before noon on Sundays in most parts of Sarasota County.

The Sarasota County Commission agreed Tuesday to lift a long-standing ban on the sale of alcohol during church hours.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1x6qYZ8 ) reports the vote came at the request of local businesses that said they were losing patrons to surrounding counties on Sunday morning. The commissioners agreed that the prohibition was an antiquated law that was put into place decades ago.

Local hotels, retailers and restaurants supported the change.

Blue Rooster co-owner Devin Rutkowski said the law was a shock to some patrons who arrived for brunch at 11 a.m. on Sundays but couldn’t order a mimosa until noon.

The cities of Sarasota, North Port and Longboat Key still have the restriction in place.
