STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - The state is looking for a new owner for a historic steel truss bridge in Augusta County.

The Mount Meridian bridge spans the Middle River on Route 769 between Grottoes and Weyers Cave. It was built in 1907 and closed in 1997.

The Virginia Department of Transportation said Thursday that it wants to transfer ownership and responsibility for the bridge to another entity. Written expressions of interest are being sought from individuals, government agencies or organizations.

VDOT says in a news release that the expressions of interest must describe how the bridge would be use and include an implementation plan. Interested entities also must show their financial and technical capabilities to maintain the bridge.

The deadline to submit expressions of interest is Dec. 5.
