NEWMARKET, N.H. (AP) - A lawyer for the Newmarket Republican committee chairman charged with assaulting an attorney general’s office investigator at the polls says his client is looking forward to his day in court.

Joe Barton was arrested Tuesday, charged with disorderly conduct, simple assault and resisting arrest. He’s been freed on personal recognizance bail and is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 2.

Foster’s Daily Democrat reports (https://bit.ly/1tLoGMK) the 38-year-old Barton declined to comment Wednesday, saying he had hired attorney Mark Sisti. Firm attorney Jared Bedrick said Barton was looking forward to his day in court.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Anne Edwards said the investigator was at the polls in response to a complaint filed against Barton. Edwards said Barton was acting as a challenger, allowed to question voters on residency, age, and citizenship.
