WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - The state of Vermont is issuing a water quality permit that will maintain the water in the Waterbury Reservoir at the same level year round.

The permit issued by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation would maintain summertime water level.

The level is designed to protect water quality and recreational use of the reservoir. Water that flows through the dam will be managed to more closely mirror the natural flow of the Little River. The flow is designed to improve fish habitat and the ecological health of the river.

The state says Green Mountain Power needs the water quality certification in order to obtain a federal operating license from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a generating station at the dam.
