WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) - A West Point graduate from 1861 is being awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War.

Descendants of 1st Lt. Alonzo Cushing will be honored at the White House on Thursday.

The Army says the award is for conspicuous gallantry on the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Though severely wounded by shrapnel, Cushing refused to leave his post while enduring the Confederate infantry assault now commonly known as “Pickett’s Charge.” Cushing was killed in the battle.

The U.S. Military Academy plans to hold its own event honoring the former Fredonia, New York resident next week.
