YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The Yakima County sheriff’s office says a deputy has fatally shot a man after a high-speed chase.

A man and a woman riding with the man who was killed Wednesday afternoon have been arrested.

Chief Criminal Deputy John Durand says deputies were trying to stop a Honda Civic reportedly linked to a recent theft when it sped off at speeds of more than 100 mph on U.S. Highway 12. Durand says when the driver turned off the highway, the vehicle came to rest against a fence. One deputy approached as the vehicle accelerated and drove toward him. Durand says the deputy fired several shots as the car struck him and knocked him to the ground.

The spokesman says the 27-year-old male driver was hit and died at the scene.

The deputy was not identified. Durand says the Washington State Patrol will be asked to investigate the shooting.

The spokesman says the Civic was a stolen vehicle.
