YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - The Yakima County sheriff’s office says a man shot to death by a deputy was driving a stolen car and had tried to speed away from a theft.

A chase that reached more than 100 mph Wednesday afternoon on Highway 12 ended just west of Yakima when the car went out of control and hit a fence.

The sheriff’s office says deputies were approaching when the driver sped toward a deputy. He fired several shots before he was knocked to the ground. The 27-year-old driver died at the scene.

Deputies arrested two other people in the car, a 17-year-old man and 27-year-old woman.

The Washington State Patrol is investigating the shooting.
