CUMBERLAND, Ind. (AP) - Fire officials say a 20-year-old man and a 13-year-old boy were hospitalized in critical condition after an explosion and fire at an apartment complex in a suburb east of Indianapolis.

The Indianapolis Fire Department reports the fire occurred about 11 a.m. Wednesday in Cumberland. The two people injured told firefighters they thought they smelled gas in the apartment the past two days. They said the explosion occurred when they lit the stove to cook.

Firefighters arriving reported heavy fire through the roof and a collapse of the rear portion of the building. Fire officials say the fire destroyed at least two apartment units in the building and two more had significant smoke and water damage. Damage to the building is estimated at $250,000.

The fire remains under investigation.
