HERMANVILLE, Miss. (AP) - A Canadian company is buying a sawmill in southwest Mississippi for $48.7 million.

Canfor Corp. of Vancouver, British Columbia, said Tuesday that it would buy Southern Lumber Co. of Hermanville from the Dearman and Sulser families.

Southern Lumber makes pine boards, specializing in wide and long lumber, with a yearly capacity of 90 million board feet. Canfor said trees around Hermanville are “of exceptionally high quality” and could allow it to make higher value products.

Canfor said it expected to complete the purchase by early 2015. Current managers are expected to remain.

The Canadian company has bought several southern pine sawmills recently, announcing in August that it would acquire two southern Georgia mills. Canfor is also spending $80 million over three years to buy Scotch Gulf Lumber of Mobile, Alabama.
