EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - An East St. Louis area prosecutor is being appointed to handle low-level crimes before they become a bigger problem.

St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly says the ultimate goal is to strengthen public safety and public trust in East St. Louis, Washington Park, Alorton and Brooklyn. He tells the Belleville News-Democrat (https://bit.ly/1thYdSk ) that the community prosecutor will work preventatively to eliminate unnecessary court appearances regarding low-level offenses at the Belleville courthouse.

Kelly says the new prosecutor will help low-income residents who lack access to transportation by bringing the justice system closer to them.

Washington Park Police Chief Aubrey Keller says he supports anything that increases access for everyone. He says it sounds like an excellent opportunity for the community.
