WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Police say a 2-year-old Delaware boy is in critical condition Wednesday after shooting himself in the head with an unsecured gun he found in his home.

New Castle County police say the toddler underwent surgery following the Tuesday shooting in his suburban Wilmington home. Police say the boy’s mother called 911 around 10 a.m. to report that her son had a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the preliminary investigation has found that the gun belongs to someone in the home but released no other details.

Detectives interviewed the boy’s mother and an investigation is underway.

Police said the Delaware Attorney General’s Office was reviewing the case to determine if charges will be filed.

An attorney general’s spokesman did not immediately have information to release about the case Wednesday.
